Life continuing on a devastating day for the Canterbury region. The winter indoors group having their end of season function at the club.
Allan Reid thanking Colin Green for his organizing efforts throughout the winter.
The St. Albans-Merivale Bowling Club suffered only minor damage in the quake. A piece of the ceiling in the lounge fell down, the phone in the kitchen was broken as were two wine glasses and a beer jug from the bar.

Urgent!!!!

We need new members, MuzzaWeb believes this is a HUGE concern for the St. Albans-Merivale Bowling Club.
All members need to recruit new players, young or old, experienced or inexperienced. Perhaps our survival depends on it!!!
23 - 8 - 10
Allan Reid and John Hampton hard at work sorting out and proofreading the upcoming season's handbook.

The third of the winter coaching sessions was held at St. Martins Bowling Club in rather cool conditions.
Our thanks to St. Martins for allowing us to use their rink.

21 - 8 - 10
The final winter coaching session was held indoors at the St. Albans-Merivale Bowling Club as the St. Martins green was unavailable.

Full concentration required.

22 - 7 - 10
Club members continue to use the clubrooms for indoor bowls during the winter months.

The 108th annual general meeting was held at
the clubrooms on Sunday, June 20. Approximately 40 club members attended and the executive for the 2010 - 11 season was elected.
Two main issues were prevalent;
     *   financial concerns.
     *   membership concerns.

The big three at the annual general meeting, outgoing finance manager Allen Snowden,  president Pat Gregory and administration manager John Pilkington getting organized.

Completing his 23rd year as finance manager, Allen Snowden reports on the position of the club's finances.

Before                                                         during                                                                       and after.

Allen joined the club in 1981 and became an executive member in 1984. He became treasurer in 1988, a position he has held continuously until his retirement. The dedication and enthusiasm Allen displayed in this task is second to none; there being no doubt that the club has been in extremely capable hands with Allen at the financial helm. This has been acknowledged by the club by awarding Allen a life membership.
It would be true to say that Allen's job has got more difficult each year. Like so many sporting clubs we have a strong reliance on finance from various pub charities and foundations. With more clubs and organizations chasing an ever diminishing dollar it is becoming very difficult to get the dollars for the general running costs.
There were no successful applications for grants from the gaming machine societies for the 2009 - 10 season.  Over the last five years these have averaged approximately $18 000 per year and have been of considerable assistance. This source of funds has to be replaced.
Members need to get more fully behind the social functions and business house bowls, which will not run themselves, to generate more alternative revenue. The good surplus in the bar revenue reflects these activities.
Other income sources are required.
For clubs to have an improved financial foundation it is essential to have a good membership base. An ever popular conundrum is how can we, as a club, attract new members?
Allen, like some others, feels that eventually amalgamation may become a forced solution. He feels that members need to be aware of amalgamation and be prepared to respond to any action suggested.
Thank you Allen for all your efforts, the Saint Albans-Merivale Bowling Club is indebted to you for all your efforts.

The 2010 - 11 season sees the introduction of a women's 2/4s competition on a Saturday morning. Let's hope the ladies take the opportunity and play in this.
MuzzaWeb applauds the introduction of this new competition.
This competition has occurred because many clubs wanted a Saturday competition for those ladies who are unable to play in the excellent midweek one. The men will once again have the 3/4s and 7s while after Christmas it will be as last year, junior 4s, 10s, men and women, and Manning Cup.

Congratulations to former club member Brian Ware who has been elected to be a selector for the 2010 - 11 season.

2 - 5 - 10
Winter bowls brings out many of the club members for both roll ups and competition.

The most famous of the indoor bowls groups is the well-known Sunday Club where some bowls are played before the social side begins.

Coaching
Comment!

Coaches and Coaching.

Positive Thoughts Are Important
You can influence your performance by your thoughts. Be aware of what is going on without focusing entirely on what you are doing.  (A pianist can lose the ability to play by focusing whole of attention only on what the fingers are doing.) The physical skill must be learned and practised until it is an automatic process. Worry (eg. about poor last bowl) tends to increase what might go wrong. Thoughts should all be directed toward building confidence and self-esteem. Focus on the task- the here and now.  Identify the task then do it.

Relax
The ability to remain calm and relaxed when the game is not going well is a skill that needs to be learned and practised. Some techniques that can help are:
1. Deep breathing
2. Breathing by numbers (in 1 out 2 up to 10)
3. Visualise a place of calm (beach, garden, lake, stream, a quiet place)
4. Progressive relaxation (draining the tension away)
5. Adopt a passive attitude.
6. A physically comfortable position.
7. Self talk. Relax mind and muscles.
8. Think of a number, word or symbol to dwell on.
